LinkedIn phone verification: a practical guide
Learn why LinkedIn may request a phone number, how to receive an SMS code responsibly, and what to check when verification fails.
LinkedIn may request a phone number when you secure an account, confirm unusual activity, recover access, or complete another identity check. Receiving an SMS code completes only the phone step; LinkedIn decides whether any further review is required.
Verify only an account you may lawfully access
Start from LinkedIn's official app or website and proceed only for your own account or one you are explicitly authorized to manage. Do not use phone verification for bulk registration, impersonation, or bypassing platform restrictions. Follow LinkedIn's User Agreement and applicable law.
Check the country and international format
Select the same country in LinkedIn and in the number service. Enter the number in the international format requested by LinkedIn, usually with the country code, and do not add that code twice. Country availability can change, and some number types may not be eligible.
Request and enter the SMS code
- Open the phone prompt in LinkedIn and confirm the country or dialing code shown.
- Visit the LinkedIn verification numbers page and choose an available country.
- Copy the assigned number exactly, request one SMS, and keep the order page open.
- When the message arrives, enter the code only in LinkedIn's official verification field.
If the SMS does not arrive
Recheck the country code, number format, and the service selected for the order. Wait for the current request instead of pressing resend repeatedly, because LinkedIn or the carrier may rate-limit attempts. If LinkedIn says the number cannot be used, follow the order rules and try another available option only when LinkedIn permits a new attempt.
Strengthen account recovery afterward
A temporary number is not a dependable long-term recovery method. After verification, keep an email address you control on the account, use a unique password, enable an authenticator app or passkey when available, and store recovery information securely. Never share the SMS code with sellers, support impostors, or other users.
Understand LinkedIn's additional risk checks
A number service cannot guarantee that LinkedIn will accept a number. LinkedIn may also assess the device, location, account history, identity details, and other risk signals, or ask for a different verification method. Use a number only for a lawful verification and follow the recovery or review instructions shown by LinkedIn.
