Creating a Telegram account with a temporary phone number
A step-by-step walkthrough — country picks, the cloud-password step you should not skip, and what to do when the temporary number expires.
Telegram is the most common reason people first try a temporary number — partly because Telegram has refused to add an email-only signup option for over a decade, and partly because most of us already have one Telegram tied to our real SIM and want a clean secondary identity. The good news is that Telegram is also one of the friendliest platforms for the temporary-number flow. Here's the practical version.
Before you start
You'll need three things at hand: an installed Telegram client (mobile or desktop both work), a jiema.my balance topped up, and about five minutes of uninterrupted attention. Telegram's verification window is generous — about ten minutes — but you don't want to get pulled away mid-flow because the second factor sometimes lands inside the Telegram chat rather than as SMS, which is easy to miss if you switched tabs.
Picking the country
Telegram delivers reliably to most of our pool. As of recent runs, these tend to work well: Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Poland, Ukraine. Avoid US numbers — they're the first range Telegram silently throttles when it's tightening on automated signups. Avoid India unless you specifically need an Indian number; the delivery rate is lower than equivalent SEA countries on most days.
On the country card, watch the stock counter. A high number (say, 5000+ in stock) usually means recent activations succeeded; a thin pool is often the first sign of an upcoming block.
The flow
- Order a Telegram number on jiema.my and wait until the phone number appears on your order page.
- Open Telegram, choose "Use a different number" if prompted, paste the number including the country code.
- Telegram will offer to send the code to your other Telegram first (because it knows the number is unfamiliar). Click "Tap to get code via SMS" — that triggers an actual SMS to the temporary number.
- The code arrives on your jiema.my order page within seconds. Paste it back in Telegram.
- Set a display name. Done — you're in.
The Cloud Password step (do not skip)
Right after first login, Telegram offers to set up a "Cloud Password" (sometimes called 2-step verification). Set it. The cloud password is what protects your account when the temporary number is gone. Without it, someone who happens to rent the same recycled phone number months later could request a new code and lock you out of the account. With it, even that won't grant access.
While you're in Settings → Privacy and Security, also:
- Set a recovery email (yes, you can — and it doesn't require SMS).
- Set Auto-Delete Messages if you want a default retention window.
- Restrict who can see your phone number to "Nobody" — by default your number is shown to your contacts; you probably don't want that on a secondary account.
If the SMS doesn't arrive
Cancel the order before the window closes (full refund) and try again in a different country. Two failures in a row from the same country means the country is in a quiet block — try a different region rather than retrying. A successful order at a different country usually completes within 30 seconds of pressing "send code".
What if Telegram later asks me to re-verify?
Telegram occasionally re-verifies after long inactivity, new device login, or suspicious usage. If you have a Cloud Password set, you can log in with that on the new device — no SMS needed. If you don't, you'd need to receive a code on the original number, which no longer routes to you. This is why the Cloud Password step is non-optional.
If you do find yourself locked out, Telegram's account recovery via the registered email is the next path. If you set neither, the account is effectively unrecoverable — which is a feature for some use cases (intentional burner) and a problem for others.
Telegram Premium and other paid features
Premium subscriptions are tied to the Telegram account, not the phone number. You can subscribe to Premium on an account created with a temporary number; the billing happens through your store of choice (App Store / Play Store / direct), independent of phone verification.
